She had measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox, and double pneumonia. She had to be taken to the doctor because her left leg was getting very weak, she soon found out she had polio in her left leg. They thought she would never walk again. But she and her mother would never give up hope that easily. The only place Wilma could go to get treated was at Meharry Hospital, the black medical college of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. It was fifty miles away but her mother took her twice a week for two years until she could walk with the help of a metal brace on her leg Finally at the age of twelve a miracle happened, she walk without a metal brace, without a crutch, without any help at all. In junior high school she followed her sister's footsteps and became a basketball player. The coach Clinton Gray did not put her in a game for three years. He finally started she her sophomore year. She started as point guard. During a tournament she was spotted by Ed Temple the couch of the famous track team called the Tigerbells. Because her school did not have a track team Ed invited Wilma to a summer sports camp for track at Tennessee State University. After graduating from high school, she received a sports scholarship and went to Tennessee State University. Because of her celebrity from her track carrier she took a year off year studies, she made appearances and participated in International track events. She returned to her studies and received a degree in education when she graduated in 1963. In 1963 she also married her high school sweetheart, Robert Eldrige, with whom she had four children, Yolanda {1958}, Djuanna {1964}, Robert Jr. {1965}, and Xurry {1971}. They later got divorced. Now I will tell you about her accomplishments. Her first accomplishment was just staying alive. But after that she won a bronze metal in the 4x4 relay race in the1956 Olympic Games at the age of 16. On September 17th 1960 in Rome she became the first women to win three Olympic gold metals. She won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and ran the anchor in the 400-meter relay team. That led her to become one of the most celebrated female athletes in history. Because of her celebrity she caused gender barriers to be broken. According to Arthur Novacek’s article in The Herald, Port Everglades has experienced steady growth in all facets for more than a decade now. The Port has also expanded physically as its business has grown over the years, but has now run out of additional room (9). The only solution to keep expanding the Port was to buy more land. This land, located next to the Port, belongs to Michael J. Swerdlow, a South Florida developer. Purchase of this land would increase the Port by 272 acres (Bussey, 20). The benefits of this expansion are endless. The expansion will convert Port Everglades into a multipurpose hub linking sea, air, rail and highway transportation (Hemlock, 6). The Port will expand its existing operations and develop a 40-acre hub in which freight, packed in shipping containers, can easily be transferred to boats, railroads, highways, or the airport (6). Port Everglades once depended solely on the petroleum industry. Now, however, Port Everglades has the second-highest cruise ship passenger count and the 12th largest containerized cargo operation in the country, and is also one of only 85 ports in America to operate with a profit (Novacek, 9). In 1996 the port showed $9.3 million in profits (Bussey, 20). According to Goodkin Research Corp. buying and developing this additional 272 acres could mean an economic impact of $3.4 billion in profit over 20 years (Hemlock, 6).

Saturday at the Canal is not a cut ND dry poem where you know exactly what it is about, it is a poem that lets us use our imagination. The poem starts out with a heart-wrenching statement â€Å"l was hoping to be happy by seventeen†. Within the first eight words of this poem, we the readers are already drawn in. We want to know why a seventeen year old is not happy at such an important point in his life. We begin to think of possible situations where a seventeen year old wouldn't be happy with life; bullying, heart break. Or maybe even death.We have to continue to read In order to understand why this teenager is having such a radar time. Sotto peaks everyone's curiosity by Implying that this teenager has never been happy In his entire life. He relies on our nosiness to ensure that we will continue to read. The character in this poem goes on to tell us reasons for his unhappiness by beginning with school. They talk about how school was â€Å"a sharp checkmate in the roll bookà ¢â‚¬  implying that school was more like a chore. Once they checked one thing off the list, another one was right there to follow.Sotto helps us see the type of teenager the character is. He brings us back into a school hallway where we hear the tuba sound for the sports pep rally. Once everyone leaves for the rally, the only people left in the hallway are the burnouts and loners. The ones with â€Å"poor grades† and â€Å"unwashed hair†, the ones similar to our character. It Is Saturday now and the character and his friend decide to go watch the water at the canal. They don't talk much but they do walk around â€Å"hurling large rocks at the dusty ground. † Our mall character tells us that they both felt awful about a postcard from San Francisco.It was their dream to get there by any means necessary, to â€Å"hitchhike under the last migrating birds† was even an option for them. This line shows how desperate they were to move forward with their lives. F or these friends, the most fun they have on a Saturday is walking by a canal throwing rocks. They wanted to move to the big city where there were big opportunities. Moving to San Francisco for these two would mean they could escape their hum- drum lives. They wanted be able to learn guitar from people who knew more than three chords.They wanted to become the rock stars they have always dreamed of. They were good kids because they didn't want to become the typical rock stars that sit around smoking and drinking. They Just wanted to be rock stars that get up on stage with their long hair and rock out with their guitars. After they are done fantasizing, reality sets back In. They realize they are still stuck in this little Podunk town of theirs. They dream about the idea of leaving but then the water â€Å"white-tipped but dark underneath, racing out of town. This line shows owe much they new the water in the canal and how they wish they could race out of town as easily as it does. Th roughout the poem you get the feeling, that ever since the boys were young they wanted to become rock stars. Unfortunately, something was always holding them back from pursuing their dreams. They originally hoped that by seventeen they would be in San Francisco rocking out but when they got to that age they slowly started to realize they were never going to fulfill that dream. Now they Just go back to the canal and watch, with new and Jealously, as the water runs out of town.
